1 Weekend Garage Storage & Shop Build

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. I am excited to announce that I have partnered with The Home Depot & Husky to show off their amazing tools and storage solutions as I build the Husky Dream Shop. I received tools for free, and I am paid for these posts, but these opinions are my own.

I have some exciting news! Katie and I recently got engaged and bought a house together. A 4000 square foot monster of a house complete with a pool, a hot tub, and loads of renovation potential. It’s in a quiet neighborhood in Oklahoma City and backs up to a creek which adds some nice relaxing views and privacy. Needless to say it’s our dream house, and I’m excited to announce the Dream House Renovation series coming to my YouTube channel in the near future.

Essentially every room in this house needs some level of updating or renovation, which is actually one of the main reasons I wanted this house so much. We are having some work done to the house before we move in; including painting, HVAC work, a few new windows, and some other odds and ends. This gave me a little time to get a workspace built out in the garage that will suit my needs for a workspace at home while still allowing both of us to park in the two car garage. I’ll still maintain my commercial shop space for larger furniture builds, but the garage shop will serve as the home base for the renovation projects and offer some storage for other items in the garage in a neat and easy to find manner.

The first thing I did was move my 52 inch Husky 9 drawer mobile workbench and 52 inch Husky 15 drawer tool cabinet into my shop. These two pieces are the centerpiece of my shop organization solutions, so I wanted to make sure I had them at the house. I also picked up the Husky 72 inch by 36 inch wide storage cabinet. Now all my tools have a place and are laid out and easy accessible. The tall cabinet is a great place to store paint and finish and all the equipment that goes with that like brushes, rags, etc. All three pieces have locks giving you extra security for your tools in the garage.

In addition to my Husky tools I built out a set of shelves with a workbench space and a cabinet for further storage needs. I have free plans for this build out, and you can build the whole thing using basic tools like a circular saw, a drill, and a jigsaw. Having a few clamps and a speed square is a big help, and no speed square is cooler than the Husky extendable square. Its a 6 inch speed square that folds out into a 12 inch square. My buddy Nate is a general contractor and was over at the house as I was building out the garage shelves. He saw the Husky square and said, “dude, that cool!”

The garage shelves are made from pine 2x4’s and MDF project panels. All easy to source materials from your local Home Depot. I tied the whole shelf system into the studs which makes for an extremely sturdy unit. Again I have those plans linked above for the whole garage shelving and workbench build out. Make sure to also check out the post for the 1 hour workbench I built. Its a super simple workbench you can build in about an hour using a drill and a circular saw and about $50 in materials.
